Our Trip to lovely Skåne

In august we set off for a country we had never travelled to before and which immediately won us over with its charm, the friendliness of the people there and the quiet and beautiful nature.

Our adventure started with our flight to Copenhagen. Once we arrived, we continued by train over the Øresund Bridge to Malmö, where we picked up our rental car to drive to a small coastal village called Vejbystrand. Our one hour drive was accompanied by heavy rain until we finally reached Villa Sigrid - our home for the next four days.

Just in time the weather changed to the better and we saw Villa Sigrid in its whole beauty with the last sprinkles of rain on it. It was a perfect welcome for us because the light is so special after a heavy rain. We went inside and were amazed by the interior. There is a lot of local design and handicrafts as the dishes in the kitchen, for example. And there are so many blankets in the apartment on armchairs, on the bed, the couch… which from the very first second gave us a feeling to be at home which is the best feeling ever when you are somewhere else.

On that evening we made our way to the nearby beach in Vejbystrand – just some walking minutes away from Villa Sigrid. The wind swept us slightly around our face and we felt so very close to nature while we were at the sea. With our typical Swedish rain coats that were offered in the apartment, we totally fit to the Swedish style. While listening to the splashing of the waves on the beach, it really felt like the perfect place to be to spend the first sunset in Sweden.

Day 1

The next day we woke up to a bright blue sky. What can be nicer than looking directly from your bed outside onto the terrace when the sun shines? After enjoying our house a little bit more and having breakfast we decided to make our way to the small village of Båstad which is just a 20-minute drive away from Villa Sigrid. There we saw some of these red houses that are so popular in Sweden and we just loved them! We went for a walk on the beach and were also totally fascinated by the fact that the Swedes go into the water with not quite so warm temperatures, while we stand there wrapped in clothes and freeze just by looking at them.

After watching these people for some time, we wanted to continue our way to Hovs Hallar which is a nature reserve nearby. We were fascinated by the cliffs and the rock formation there. It belongs to the famous long-distance hiking path called “Skåneleden” and offers caves and a lot of fantastic stone formations. So it is definitely worth a visit. We explored the area a little bit, climbed some rocks and looked for the perfect perspective. Due to the fact that this area is so extensive, you can enjoy the nature almost on your own.

We decided to end our day in the sweet and small village called Torekov. It’s also located near Hovs Hallar so you can perfectly spend one day visiting all those destinations without rushing. And we totally love these charming village. Everything is more slowly and more relaxing and you really got a good impression of how the Swedish way of life looks like. Besides, the light on that day was just insane. There was a short rain shower beforehand and the sky turned into magical colors. It was a mix from a soft golden sunset to a blue sky with a violet stain. Purely amazing.

Day 2

The following day we woke up to sunshine again. We had a quick breakfast and then set off for our next journey. The first stop on this day was Jakriborg. An absolutely stunning settlement between Malmö and Lund. It has a lot of picturesque and colorful houses and you some kind of feel like you are on a movie set. We can hardly describe the feeling we had there. You have to imagine one long street which is very neat and you see just a few people every now and then. There is just one supermarket and everyone seems to know each other. And there was one restaurant but it was closed so it looked kind of abandoned, but at the same time throughout the colorful houses around very much alive. We were so excited about this place because of this. It gave us an overwhelming tranquility and we couldn’t believe that this is a real place. One day we definitely want to go back there.

After some time in Jakriborg, we drove just some more minutes to the university town of Lund. Although it’s the third largest city in the area we made just a short stop there because on this day we wanted to focus a little more on nature. But this town is definitely worth a visit. It has a lot of shops and libraries, so you can easily browse through everything throughout an afternoon. And we can totally recommend the restaurant “Restaurant Stäket” because the salmon is so delicious there. So Lund is a perfect city to just wander a little bit around, eat very well or do some shopping.

Meanwhile we drove further south in the direction of Skanör which was our destination on that day. We passed the Crown Torp Mill (which is a great photo spot by the way) and came through a beautiful tree-lined avenue where the light was so warm coming down through the leaves. And this gleam of light created a very magical mood while walking through it. This is one thing for us which is really special in Sweden because the different tones of light are so intense there that you can lose yourself in it and dream about it all day long.

As we arrived in Skanör we loved the picture that was offered to us from the beginning: On the one side we saw some kite surfers in the water and on the other side we saw a lot of colorful little bathing huts on the beach. This was just a perfect and very vivid composition. Spending a sunset sitting on the beach or walking along it while having such a view is absolutely a thing you should do while staying in Skåne. We loved the evening there so much and still remember the sound of the waves breaking on the beach while breathing the fresh air coming from the sea.

Day 3

On our third day we finally wanted to get to know a Swedish city somewhat better. So we packed our bags and made us on the way to Helsingborg, the second largest city in the Skåne area. We parked our car directly opposite the old town hall which is a very impressive brick building with sharp towers and two old staircases guiding into it. We have never seen such an amazing town hall before! It looks very majestic and due to the peaks kind of like a castle. Looking from there to the right there is another very giant building which this time really is a part of an old castle complex. There are big stairs leading through a great arch and at half the height there is also a nice well where some people throw money in. A total must see from our side! You can then go back to the ground of the stairs and stroll through the alleys on the left and the right hand side, sit down in a café and just watch the people there. We recommend to plan at least 3-4 hours if you want to get a good first impression of the city.

After spending the day until the afternoon in Helsingborg, we decided to drive back to Villa Sigrid for a short break and then heading to Hovs Hallar for a photo shooting in the evening light again. Everything looks much more intense in the soft glow of the setting sun. You can feel the air in your face and take a really deep breath as this is so relaxing at the sea.

Day 4

Sadly this day was our last one and we really wanted to enjoy Sweden once more to the fullest. So after having breakfast we drove to the Kullaberg Nature Reserve which is a very large area with a lot of different vegetation and a home for a variety of animals. There are a lot of hiking trails along the cliffs and you can also go directly to the shore (next to the smaller white lighthouse) where you have a great view over the wide sea. From this spot you can as well see some boats on the water which offer porpoise safaris. Next time we are there, we will definitely book one. It is probably a super great experience. We then wanted to go into the big lighthouse, Kullens Fry, but unfortunately it was closed that day. But in general it houses a café and a small museum and we can imagine that it is very nice drinking your coffee there while looking on the sea. Instead we decided to drive to the nearby restaurant “Ransvik Havsveranda” for lunch and cake. If you sit outside, you have a seat on the terrace which has a direct view on the sea. We ate salmon again and had some cake for dessert and it both tastes fantastic. So if you are going to visit Kullen, make sure you stop at this restaurant for lunch or fika (which is the wonderful Swedish word for having coffee and a cake).

After our break we drove just about 7 minutes to the next small vishing village called Mölle. It was pretty windy here, so we just walked around making some pictures. There is also a small harbour with some nice restaurants around it, so if you going to go there you will easily find a place to eat or drink as well.

For the evening we decided to go to a part of Kullen called Josefinelust. It is a small stretch of beach to which a long and steep staircase leads and which is dotted with my small and large stones all over. It was like a bay in which one perceives the sea even more concentrated in one space. Just make your own picture of it looking at our photos. I think this was the perfect end for our Sweden trip. We could not have been at another beautiful place like that. So all in all we are so thankful to had the chance to experience this country where we didn't know exactly what to expect beforehand. But we both loved it from the very first second on and left Sweden with this feeling of being able to take very deep breaths and relax while having nature so close at hand, that we already miss.
